Going to Laredo

Born and raised in Ohio, and never having even flown in a plane, Dad heads to pilot training in Laredo, Texas. Below are both my Dad’s written words setting this story to paper in August 2020 and a video of our discussion about this time period.

IN HIS WORDS:

After a few weeks in basic training and three months in officers’ training, I was sent to Laredo AFB, Texas, on the Mexican-American border, for pilot training.

We lived in an apartment near the base and paid more than half my salary for rent and electricity. There was almost no work for the wives in town; so most spent their days drinking at the pool. Most also got pregnant.
